Pens Around the World anthology online launch

I’ve been a member of Pens Around the World since the very beginning over five years ago. We are a peer group of creative writers working in English who live (or have lived) in far-flung places. I qualify for membership having travelled overland and lived in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Spain and more recently Uganda. You can read about some of my experiences here. We help each other with critiques and encouragement, writing exercises and suggestions for publishing opportunities. Each week one of our members posts a blog and we’re thrilled that a selection of these pieces now feature in our anthology. It includes stories of travel, memory, creativity, friendship and self-discovery and reflects on the experiences that connect us, wherever we call home.

Please join us for the launch of the anthology on Sunday 4 October at 1pm BST/2pm CEST. We’re delighted that some of our guest contributors including Marsali Taylor, author of the Shetland sailing mysteries; Jimena Ferraris and Raissa Claire R. Falgui will also be present. All you have to do is click the link below on the day:

Incidentally, if you’re a writing and living in a far-flung place, would you like to join us? Check out our membership arrangements.

Writing autobiography: prompts for prose and poetry

9558910During the latest Lit Up professional development training for facilitators, activities to develop autobiographical prose and poetry were presented. Participants responded to the very structured tasks in a deeply imaginative way and this impressed me so much, that I thought I’d share the activities here.   To create a 10-line poem, respond to the prompts in the centre column by recording your ideas in the third column.

Line 1 Your given name
Line 2 List 4 of your traits
Line 3 Complete the line Daughter of/Son of…
Line 4 Lover of…
Line 5 Who feels…
Line 6 Who needs…
Line 7 Who gives…
Line 8 Who fears…
Line 9 Who would like…
Line 10 Resident of…

Another idea uses free writing where every sentence begins with the words I am…   Have a go with these activities and let me know how you get on!
