Trying to get into a writing routine

on April 2, 2026

My calendar is populated with trips this year. I’ve just come back from Portugal where David and I completed the second half of the Fishermen’s Trail in a week. It was an arduous walk – more like a hike – as we followed the single track alongside the coast on top of honey-coloured cliffs. Many of the coves and beaches can only be reached by foot or by sea, so that made it very special. The challenges included lugging a backpack, steep inclines, walking on sand and 42mph winds. Towards the end of the trail around Lagos, the cliffs become more weathered to produce spikes in the sea, arches and sink holes. The Algarve is amazingly beautiful.

I’m now back at home and recovering from a persistent upper respiratory infection that has had me coughing for weeks. Fortunately, the local pharmacists suggested a cough mixture with Dextromethorphan (apparently highly addictive) which has soothed my cough reflex. Thank goodness, I feel on the road to recovery. I even went for an early morning run today but came home too exhausted to begin writing at 8am which is my usual approach. Does anyone have tips to help me establish a proper writing routine? One that can be sustained through further travels as we’re heading for Sardinia at the end of May. Please jot any ideas in the comments. Thanks!

  1. Hi Gail! I don’t really have any tips, but I wish you a strong recovery from the upper respiratory infection! I hope the medicine and Sardinia combined do the trick! What an amazing trail you just did in the Algarve!
