About

1Gail in glasses

I hold a PhD in creative writing and have appeared at Stockholm Writers Festival, Bridport Literary Festival, Bournemouth Writing Festival and the Mani Lit Fest in Greece. I’ve taught undergraduates at the University of South Wales and Arts University Bournemouth. Prior to Covid-19, I volunteered at Bidibidi in Uganda, the second largest refugee settlement in the world. I drew upon this experience to colour the narrative in my latest manuscript The Upgrade. When I’m not travelling, I split my time between a tiny flat in South West London and a home overlooking water meadows in Dorset.

Competition prizes for my writing include a never-to-be-forgotten writing retreat at Moniack Mhor in Inverness, a monogrammed Smythson notebook presented by ElleUK, a celebration evening at a nightclub and cash.

Thank you for visiting. I can’t claim that the writer is a lonely hunter if you keep coming back.  I aim to post regular writerly thoughts and points for discussion.  Please leave a question or comment to keep the dialogue going.

  1. Hi Gail,
Hope you don’t mind but I’ve tagged you in the Lucky 7 Meme http://joannegphillips.wordpress.com/2012/03/31/lucky-7-a-random-act-of-editing/
There’s no pressure to take part, it’s just a fun way of sharing some writing and looking at editing a bit differently. Really enjoying your blog,
    All the best,
    Jo

      Hi Jo

Thanks for thinking of me – I’m glad you’re enjoying my blog. If you liked doing the Lucky 7 exercise, you might want to think about posting some work on the page 99 website. It’s the same idea, but takes an excerpt from page 99 of your manuscript. I learnt about this from a self-published author who used this as a mechanism for promoting her work. Not quite sure how she managed this but it might to be worth investigating when you launch ‘Can’t Live Without’. On my page 99, people keep commenting on my use of dialogue tags, something else to edit! Here’s the link: http://www.page99test.com/index.php

      All the best

      Gail

  2. Hi Gail,
Oops – I’ve done it again 🙂 I’ve nominated you for the Sunshine Award – no pressure to take part, and sorry if you’ve done it before/hate this type of thing. But I just thought of your website design and it seemed to fit, somehow 🙂
